Session: “Collaborative CDI and Coder Learning Enhanced Through A CDI Educator Role”
Mary Elizabeth VanGelder, RN, BSN, MREd, CCDS will be speaking on ‘Collaborative CDI and Coder Learning’. She will be speaking on the importance of compliance monitored through chart audits, CDI and coder team work through reconciliation process and educating both the CDI and Coders with the goal being collaborative learning and interactions. She will be providing clinical examples on Acute Respiratory Failure vs airway protection, Types of AKI and clinical validation process.

Mary Elizabeth (M.E.) VanGelder, RN, BSN, MREd, CCDS began her role as a Clinical Documentation Specialist in 2014 while working at Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix, AZ. She became a Clinical Documentation Specialist at HonorHealth, a five hospital network in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area, then was offered the Network Clinical Documentation Educator position for HonorHealth, providing physician and staff education across all facilities in February, 2017. Her experience includes 30 years of nursing experience, with 5+ years working as an RN case manager; she now serves as co-chair of the Education chapter of ACDIS for 2017-2018.
Session: “Have You Heard?….They’re Back!” ICD10-CM 2019 Updates
October 1, 2018 will mark the third mandated update to the ICD-10-CM classification systems. Whether you are a provider, payer, auditor, or vendor, anyone who deals with medical insurance claims needs to be aware of these changes and how to interpret them. This training will provide you with the knowledge you need to navigate successfully through these changes.
- Apply the numerous coding updates and revisions
- Identify the deleted codes and determine what to use instead
- Recognize potential documentation needs

- Implement guideline revisions and apply them with confidence
Kathy Andersen, RHIT, CCS, CRCS-I, CRCS-P,NREMT
Kathy has over 35 years of experience in the Healthcare Industry. She has worked directly with Physicians, Nursing and Staff in the development of guidelines, educational tools, and software implementation to achieve proper reimbursement for serves provided. Kathy is a Registered Health Information Technician~ graduate program and Registered through AHIMA, National American University, and Western Nebraska Community College, Certified Educator and ICD-10 CM/PCS Trainer, Certified Coding Specialist, Certified Revenue Cycle Specialist-Institutional and Physician Based, and a Registered Emergency Medical Technician. She has worked in both the Hospital and Clinic settings as well as with Long Term Care Centers in both South Dakota, Nebraska and Arizona. She is the Past President and Past-Director of Education for SDHIMA and Past President for the Nebraska Region IV -AHIMA. She was the first to be Board Certified in Advanced Coding (Inpatient and Outpatient) in South Dakota through The Board of Advanced Coding. Kathy was also recently awarded the SDHIMA Distinguished Member of the Year Award for 2013. This is the highest award a healthcare professional can receive by their State Association. SDHIMA elected Kathy as their SDHIMA President in 2014. She is Also a presenter and presider for AHIMA’s National Convention in September.2014 and received the Honorable Mention Award in Coding Education and First place in the Coding Roundtable Leadership Award. She currently serves on the AHIMA Advocacy Council and Policy Committee.

Gina Stinson has over 30 years experience in end-to-end healthcare revenue cycle operations with specific expertise in front revenue operations and denial prevention and management.
As nThrive’s Sr. Director Process Excellence, Ms. Stinson is considered an innovative thought leader responsible for driving business success in collaboration with cross-functional teams. She is responsible for facilitating revenue cycle initiatives, identifying and evangelizing service optimization and efficiency opportunities via technology and automation as well as continued process improvement. Gina’s expertise is routinely leveraged for other initiatives within the organization. Prior her current role, Gina served as VP, Managed Care Services for nThrive overseeing all aspects of payment variance services.
She also served as AVP, Revenue Cycle overseeing denial management and prevention at Mercy Health in Ohio and Regional Director Patient Access for Conifer.
Mrs. Stinson holds a BA in Healthcare Management and an AA in Business.
She resides outside Houston, TX with her husband, Bill. Together, they have two children and one grandchild. Her hobbies include photography and DNA genealogy.

In any case, you must notify AzHIMA in writing by email or fax as soon as possible. A 25% processing fee will be assessed on all cancellations received at least two weeks prior to the appropriate meeting date. After that date, the full registration fee will be forfeited. All refunds will be processed within 30 days of receipt.
